PUC

Project

The ICSMP will help the Government and PUC to develop a strategy for the sanitation sector for the next 25 years based on a new paradigm: “waste is a resource”. Figure 1 below shows the links of the ICSMP to the National Sustainable Development Strategy.

The objective of the project is to generate evidence on the market demand for sludge by-products (Resource Recovery and Reuse (RRR) products) and treated sewage effluent, recovered nutrients and energy from sludge and waste water. The main questions to reply are :

  • What is the supply and market demand?
  • What is the market size for this business opportunity?
  • Who will be the customers for use of sludge and treated sewage effluent, recovered nutrients and energy from sludge and waste water and other related by-products in Seychelles?
  • 4How to enter the market?
  • Who are the present actors in wastewater sludge and their by-products supply and demand management in Seychelles?
  • What is the legal framework within which wastewater sludge and their by-products as aresource operates and controlled in Seychelles

Ecofilae’s actions

Ecofilae‘s objectives were :

  • to define the key potential Resource recovery products based on the volume and type of waste-water generated in Seychelles.
  • to determine the potential market size
  • to analyse the legal, institutional and socio-political contexts
  • to identify commodities that can be produced on wastewater treatment plants and those that would have to be transported away for third parties to produce.
  • to carry out a quantification of existing and potential markets
  • to identify and map the potential users and private operators
  • to identify potential strategic alliances with other industries to produce commodities
  • to identify the quality requirements
  • to determine the knowledge, attitudes from potential users on using the products
  • to detremine the potential for energy recovery and the possible uses based on the proposed quantities generated
  • to propose ways to promote a greater use of products in Seychelles while strengthening the competitiveness of targets sectors including agriculture, energy and industry
  • to Consider the impacts of logistics (transport and fuel costs) and topography (ease of application and downstream effect on environment)
